We went to Maui Dec. 4-12 for my older son's wedding, and did many memorable activities around the island. One was getting up at 2:30AM and driving up to the 10023' Haleakala summit before twilight to look at stars, then watch the sunrise. Here's a 30 second shot of the Southern Cross rising in the southeast over the west flank of Mauna Loa on the Big Island. Beta Centauri is also visible just above the horizon, and you can see Omega Centauri almost directly above the Mauna Loa summit, near the top of the photo. The latitude there was about 20 degrees, but the summit was only a little warmer than that!
